Now in its second year, the Analytics Datathon is a challenge to sift through and analyse a large amount of data in a short amount of time to solve a particular problem.

The competition is open to both corporate and student teams, and has a total prize pool of $25,000.

The Datathon will run over two days on July 7 and 8 at Melbourne Business School. Teams will only gain access to the challenge at the event, but it could include financial, retail, loyalty and health data.

Finalists will then present their insights at the Melbourne Business Analytics Conference on July 19.

"By linking private sector and government datasets, the Datathon will show what’s possible in innovation," says Mark Alexander, Executive Director at the Centre for Business Analytics.

"The final pitches take place in front of 400 of Australia’s top corporates at the conference."

Teams will use SAS Advanced Analytics software and Data Republic's platform on Amazon Web Services to show how analytics can uncover unique solutions to important problems.

Last year, 60 teams competed to improve healthcare in Victoria by analysing 500 million anonymous card transactions, 100 million grocery purchases, two million Qantas Frequent Flyer profiles and data from the Victorian Department of Health.

The winning corporate team used the data to discover regions with low child immunisation rates and propose the circulation of mobile immunisation vans at shopping centres in those areas.
